The G8 Tree's Whistle-Stop Tour of Europe

Many members of Newcastle University People and Planet went to participate in the 2005 Make Poverty History rally in Edinburgh (BBC article). Aware that there were many people who would like to be there but couldn't make it, we determined to take messages from Newcastle-bound supporters to the event so they were, in some way, represented.

On our stall at the local Community Green Festival a few weeks before the rally, we created a 'G8 Tree' - a banner of a tree with the leaves bearing messages from well-wishers. We got some 200 leaves to put on the tree, from 'Stop Climate Chaos' to 'Make Trade Fair' to some foreign ones and downright weird ones.

The G8 tree was so well-received at Edinburgh, we decided it merited a slight extension to its tour of duty and, having a couple of days free, we decided to take it on a whistle-stop tour of Europe:
