About us

Friends of the Earth North East is one part of Friends of the Earth England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Consisting of a regional office with a full-time staff member and a growing network of local groups, we work to improve and protect the environment of the North East for present and future generations through campaigning, influencing policy and supporting people locally to take action where they live.

What we believe

Our environment supports everything we do. It gives us the clean air we need to breathe, the soil in which to grow our food, the natural resources to produce energy and the goods we use every day. There is no limit to what the environment does for us. Without it, we would not exist.

Friends of the Earth believes that everyone should have a high quality of life, both now and in the future. We believe that protecting and enhancing the environment is absolutely essential for this. Such is our dependence on the environment that if its ability to function fully is impaired, our lives will suffer. Poor air quality, an irregular and extreme climate, contaminated land and a shortage of essential resources such as water are just some of the things we already experience due to humans pushing the environment beyond its natural limits.

We want the North East to be a region where everyone has clean air to breathe, where quality green space, landscapes, plants and wildlife are plentiful and enjoyed by all, where vibrant local communities provide the jobs, services, amenities and natural healthy food people need. We believe these are essential to a high quality of life.

We want the North East to be a region where people can lead fulfilling, enjoyable lives without harming the environment we all depend on. We want the North East to be a region where walking, cycling or traveling by public transport is as easy and attractive as using a car, where recycling is easier than throwing away, where reducing our use of the earth's natural resources is part of the norm.

The North East is beautiful. We want it to stay that way for generations to come.

What we do

Friends of the Earth North East works to deliver our vision for the region. This means influencing regional and local policy-making, raising public awareness of environmental issues, promoting solutions to environmental problems and campaigning against proposals that would be environmentally damaging. Recent and current areas of work include:

  • Working to ensure a better future for the North East through influencing the Regional Spatial Strategy, a legally-binding document setting out how the region will develop over the next 15 years
  • Campaigning for regional action to tackle climate change
  • Campaigning against the dismantling on Teesside of the Ghost Ships from the US
  • Empowering disadvantaged communities on Teesside to tackle causes of environmental injustice where they live (for more information, click here) [link to IMPACT website]
  • Campaigning against the proposed second Tyne Tunnel (for more information, click here) [link to TCA website]
  • Developing new local groups across the North East

Individual action is vital to our work. To find out how you can get involved, please contact us.
