Byker and Newcastle Waste (BAN Waste)

BAN Waste exists to support a sustainable waste strategy for Newcastle based on the principle that resource recovery should be at the heart of that strategy and that the burning or landfill of waste should be a last resort.
The group grew out of the opposition to the Byker Incinerator and although we still carefully monitor all steps to build incinerators and similar technologies in the North-East, we have become a lot more proactive in promoting recycling initiatives and the general process of education for eliminating waste.
We have produced a number of reports on sustainable waste strategies over the past few years, including 'Too Good to Waste' and 'A Wealth of Waste' in 2003 and ran a Select Committee to explore all aspects of waste and recycling.
BAN Waste is currently proactive in a number of areas, including-
- A pilot scheme to develop doorstep recycling facilities in the Byker and Battlefield areas of Newcastle.
- Participation in community recycling networks.
- Running recycling schemes at major events in the region.
- Recycling Education and Awareness.
